One of the most prominent voices for abolition in the 1700s was Olaudah Equiano, a confessing Christian. He was born in Benin (now Nigeria). He was captured at age 11, was traded around Africa, and worked as a sailor before he purchased his freedom at 21. Monica Edinger uses his memoir to tell his remarkable story.
