The PACT Act will help millions of vets sickened by the dangerous smoke. The Department of Veterans Affairs will presume that certain respiratory illnesses and cancers are related to burn pits. That means that veterans won’t have to prove these illnesses are a result of their service. The military used burn pits to dispose of waste until the mid-2010s. Burning rubber, chemicals, ammunitions, and medical waste created toxic fumes.
